Not sure where your child belongs in the Saxon Middle Grades sequence? You are not alone. One of the most difficult tasks in helping children succeed in mathematics is dealing with the transition grades (5-8). Many options exist built on a wide variety of beliefs and methodologies. Children develop at different paces. And Saxon is a fairly unique curriculum.
Because of this, Saxon provides a Middle Grades Placement Test. A child in these grades can take the test and it will help with the process of appropriate placement. It is not foolproof. But it is a very helpful tool, especially when placing a child who is moving into Saxon material in the middle grades. Students are most successful in mathematics when they are placed according to skill, and not according to age.
If you are considering using Saxon curriculum with a child in these grades, here is the test which you can download, print-off, and score yourself. It will test your child over material ranging from Saxon 5/4 to Algebra 1/2. Depending on the results, it will recommend working as low as Saxon 5/4, or as high as Algebra I.
