Elementary Phonics 2

Suggested Age

5-7 years

Prerequisite

Elementary Phonics 1, or previous exposure to phonograms

Purpose

The purpose of this class is to build on the basic building blocks of our written language so that they may independently enjoy reading and writing. Specifically, we will:

• Review the 70 basic phonograms that make up all words
• Practice neat penmanship by practicing writing sounds and words
• Instruct in the use of phonogram knowledge to sound out and read words
• Build skills sounding and spelling words to reinforce fluent reading of words

The One Day Academy phonics program is heavily based upon Romalda Spalding’s The Writing Road to Reading and Wanda Sanseri’s Spell to Write and Read and Teaching Reading at Home and School. This approach is based on the idea that students can read words that they can spell and have interacted with on multiple sensory levels.

In Phonics 2, students are given a spelling list each week, which we study both phonetically and according to spelling rules. Over the course of the week, students interact with the words through various reading and writing enrichments.
