Primary

This course will include oral reading in a relaxed format to determine if there are any problems with decoding skills that need to be overcome in order to focus on comprehension skills. This will be an ongoing process as the passages increase in difficulty.

We will also use passages at the student’s reading level to develop comprehension skills such as recall of details, author’s purpose, sequencing, summarizing, main idea, drawing conclusions, identifying with characters, character traits, and making inferences. We will use context clues to gain understanding of the meaning of unknown words from a text.

The instructor is experienced in identifying and targeting reading difficulties in an encouraging way that builds confidence in the student.

Secondary

This course is designed to target specific reading skills that will can be strengthened to increase reading speed, comprehension, accuracy, and confidence. Each student is encouraged to apply reading techniques to subjects they are currently taking.
